Basically, a cavity is a hole in your tooth. How does the hole get there? Technically dental caries or cavities are caused by streptococcus mutans, a bacteria that we all have in our mouth’s. As sugar enters our mouth, it’s broken down by this streptococcus mutans and secretes acid as a by product. It’s this acid that can start to dissolve and soften our enamel (enamel is the outer layer of the tooth, and actually the strongest substance our body makes). These softened spots provide a route for bacteria to enter and cause the tooth to decay. Thus the hole in your tooth.
